Every player will tell you that pre-season is one of the most important periods of the campaign. Without the proper standard of physical, mental and tactical preparation, a team can be set up to fail before they’ve even started. Many dressing rooms across the years have fallen apart before a ball has been kicked, leaving squads and managers under pressure.
However, under the tutelage of new Head Coach Frank Chiarella, club captain Jon Reay is of the belief that the Super League outfit couldn’t be better primed. A debut season in English Futsal’s top division will be challenging for everybody, not least the ever-present captain.
“Pre-season has gone well. Frank [Chiarella] has taken over as head coach and there has been a lot of information to take in.” On the new man’s methods, Reay was full of praise. “He has a superb knowledge of the game. The training sessions have been very informative, intense and enjoyable, and I can see a fresh focus & determination amongst this group.”
Of course, Carlisle Futsal is an outfit that likes to promote from within, and there will be youth members looking to make their mark this season. “We have some talented younger lads developing”, said Reay. “I think that there will be a battle each week to make the match day squad which is exactly what we all need.”
Beyond preseason, Jon is looking forward to the imminent beginning of the campaign. A season that promises a rollercoaster into the unknown has, according to Reay, excited the squad. “Confidence is growing. We are hoping to surprise a few people, starting at Sheffield on Sunday.”
The skipper’s evident affection for Carlisle Futsal Club is bound to filter down the rest of the squad. He will be leading out a very proud team in Sheffield on Sunday the 13th of September, as Carlisle Futsal look to match an historic occasion with a landmark result.
